A
Word From The President --
But First, An Important Press
Release |
On
Friday, November 4, FrontRange announced they've been purchased
by Francisco Partners, one
of the world's largest technology-focused investment firms.
According
to FrontRange CEO Michael McCloskey, “FrontRange
Solutions has out-performed the industry for the last two
years, growing at a rate that far exceeds our competition.
During this period, we have invested heavily in both R&D
and sales expansion, while continuing to increase our profitability.
With several new products coming to market, we are well-positioned
for continued growth, and plan to increase our market share.”
“This investment by such a respected firm is good for
FrontRange and its employees, customers and partners,” said
Sheryl Kingstone, Senior CRM Analyst with The Yankee Group. “FrontRange
has performed well in the last two years and in conjunction
with Francisco Partners we would expect them to pursue an
aggressive growth strategy. Customers and prospects should
expect the following: market expansion, innovation, and potential
acquisitions.”
Summarizing, McCloskey said, “We are committed to
providing our Customers and partners with market leading
products and superior service and support. This investment
further strengthens that commitment."
Joel Scott Comments:
On Friday, November 4, just prior to their annual
dealer conference, FrontRange announced they've been
purchased by Francisco Partners, one of the world's largest
technology-focused investment and management firms.
The
big question for GoldMine dealers and users is, “What
will this really mean?”
Some of us have lived through this before. You might
remember 1999 when the group from South Africa bought
GoldMine and Bendata and tried to put those two technologies
and people together. This is our fourth time dealing
with such acquisitions.
On the positive side Francisco Partners will contribute
some needed capital to fuel development and, maybe, some
acquisitions. We can also anticipate some senior management
changes at FrontRange. This always happens in the twelve
months following an acquisition. Depending on your viewpoint,
this could be a good thing or a bad thing.
We are likely to see no significant changes for 3-6 months.
It will appear to be business as usual. Then, management
changes will begin and the inevitable slowdown in decision-making
and business activity. Once the internal churning subsides,
we should see good things happening.

GoldMine
7 (Corporate Edition) is Released
GoldMine
Version 7 (Corporate Edition) is now available. Here
are the FAQs:
Who
can get it and how much does it cost?
If
you own Corporate Edition of GoldMine 6.x, and if your Maintenance
Contract is active, you can upgrade now at no additional cost.
If your Maintenance Contract has expired, contact Paul
Cappa for upgrade pricing/options.
What's
new?
GoldMine 7 is based on SQL, with either a Firebird or Microsoft
engine. The old Borland data engine is gone. Firebird is
an open source version of Microsoft SQL. There's no more
Pack & Rebuild and the 2 GB file size limitation
is gone. This size limitation is most notable in the Mailbox
table which, naturally, can get very large over time. Now,
as a remote user for example, you don't have to worry when
syncing large Mailbox files. Firebird gives you the speed
and stability of
SQL, too.
What if I'm in dBase?
There is a new version of GoldMine for you. It's called GoldMine
6.8 and we've been told it will ship in December. Contact
Paul
Cappa for upgrade information.
Any Known Issues I Should Be Aware Of?
Microsoft Office
2003 (SP2) hasn't been tested yet and will not be supported
until testing has been completed.
Windows ME and 98SE are not supported.

Use
the Timer to Track the Duration of Your Phone Calls
You
pick up the phone and a client is on the line. Press
the F8 key. A Timer begins to log the duration of your
call. It appears in the Status bar at the bottom of your
screen.

This
is a handy device, especially if you track call time as
a billable. Here's
a typical usage scenario: bring up the record of the person
who's on the phone. Start the Timer (F8 or use Edit|Timer|Start
Timer). Then select Complete|Unscheduled Call Outgoing Call
(or Incoming Call, as appropriate). Enter any relevant Notes,
Codes and Resulting Codes. When you click OK to complete
the call, the elapsed time is automatically captured in the
Duration field of the activity.

Let's
say you need to interrupt the call to speak with someone
else, then pick up the call again. Shift F8 pauses the
Timer (or select Edit|Timer|Pause Timer). Then, when you're
ready to resume tracking time, press Ctrl F8
(or Edit|Timer|Restart Timer). You're billing again!

HELP!
I've Lost My Help!
There
is a problem accessing GoldMine Help on a computer running
WIndows XP Pro and GoldMine version 6.7. You get an error
that Help is not available and cannot be found. The problem
is in your Registry, where XP PRO thinks that GoldMine
Help is Spyware and won't allow it to run. We have a Regkey
edit file that fixes the problem quickly and easily. Click
here to get it. Once you have the regedit file,
follow these steps:
1. Exit
GoldMine (assuming GoldMine is open).
2.
Copy the Regkey file to "My Documents."
3.
Open "My Documents" and
double click on the file.
4.
Start GoldMine.
Your
Help should be re-enabled. You
can copy the file to the network and execute it on each
user's workstation. Thanks to our Director of CRM Sales,
Paul Cappa for the research.

use in general.

We Wander

We wander the Web to identify very helpful (and sometimes,
very esoteric) websites.
1.
Sorry
Yankee fans -- this one's for the Bosox.
Our good friend Ted Chmura has written and produced
a great tune for Red Sox fans. Check it out at: http://www.redsoxrock.com/

It's the Holiday Season so here's one for game lovers.
You've
probably heard about Sudoku, a puzzle/game that's being
played in lunchrooms, waiting rooms and aisle seats everywhere.
